Gopher Control

Southwest Montana is home to several different species of gophers, or more appropriately called ground squirrels. If you have gophers or ground squirrels on your property that are causing problems, we may be able to help. Eradication of rodent species are difficult, but with the correct product and timing some control can be achieved. Below are listed species that may be found in Southwest Montana.

Richardson’s Ground Squirrel

Richardson Ground Squirrel | Montana Gopher Control | TerraNova LLC | Dillon, MT
This is a relatively small squirrel that inhabits all of our region. It is light tan in color and is the most common rodent pest in our areas. Richardson’s ground squirrels eat young crop sprouts and create mounds in a field that are hard on harvest equipment.

Columbian Ground Squirrel

These ground squirrels occur at higher elevations. They are slightly bigger in size than Richardson’s ground squirrels and have more of a red color. Usually, their populations don’t reach levels that call for control measures. These ground squirrels occur at higher elevations. Thirteen Line Ground Squirrel

Thirteen Lined Ground Squirrel | Montana Gopher Control | TerraNova LLC | Dillon, MT
These are the smallest of ground squirrel species in Montana. They prefer habitats with tall grass. Unlike other species, their diets consist mostly of insects. Their colonies are usually very small. These squirrels are relatively rare and have 13 distinct stripes that run down their back that are black and white and appear somewhat spotty.

Uinta and Slender Ground Squirrels

These two species are actually exclusive to Southwest Montana. They are both very similar to Richardson’s and cause similar damage.

Pocket-Gopher

Pocket Gopher | Gopher Control | TerraNova LLC | Dillon, MT
Pocket gophers are smaller in size and are rarely seen above ground. Control is difficult because of this fact. These rodents feed on roots and bulbs underneath the surface. They create mounds in a field but have no openings. Pocket-Gophers are commonly mistaken for moles.

Gophers and ground squirrels cause substantial damage to both crops and pastures. They disturb the ground and make for rough travel across infested areas. Also, their holes pose a leg-breaking threat to livestock. If you believe you have a rodent problem or would like some free consultation please don’t hesitate to call. Applications must be made in early spring.
